This book was written for the millions of California independent contractors and the companies who hire them. It provides a framework for understanding and interpreting the new laws redefining the difference between an “employee” and an “independent contractor” under California law. 

This book is pragmatic more than policy focused. It breaks down a complex law into a series of worksheets and flowcharts along with an annotated version of the law itself. It provides context for AB5, some examples of the consequences of the law, and overviews the range of efforts to repeal, modify, or challenge the law in the courts. Finally, it includes suggestions for working within the current state of the law by setting up an AB5 compliant micro-business, and sample letters and contract language for independent contractors and hiring entities to use as a starting point in modifying business operations to comply with AB2257.
